Silver Star Groundbreaking Draws Supporters

On Friday, April 8, 2016, A Community of Friends broke ground on the Silver Star Apartments development. Despite an early afternoon drizzle and a bit of mud, the site was crowded with supporters and well-wishers. Special guests included the Honorable Marqueece Harris-Dawson, Johanna Gullick, Dr. Robin Kay, Stephen Peck, Rushmore Cervantes, Jacqueline Waggoner, and many more.

A Silver Star is awarded for “gallantry in action,” a fitting name for this new 49-unit development designed to meet the needs of homeless veterans. The three-story, affordable housing development is located in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Los Angeles. Silver Star Apartments will aim for USGBC LEED® Platinum designation as well as Net Zero Energy certification.

Additionally, the project will have the first permitted system for indoor greywater reuse in affordable multifamily rental housing in the City of Los Angeles. This will preserve over half a million gallons of water per year. Amenities include a community room, garden, computer lab, laundry facilities, and on-site parking.
